The Core Rules of Yard Sign Design

Coroplast yard signs are the backbone of local political campaigns, real estate open houses, and weekend events. However, most people design them incorrectly. A yard sign is typically viewed by drivers moving at 35-45 MPH. You have roughly 2 seconds to convey your message.

  • Keep it Simple: Limit the text to 3 lines maximum (e.g., Name, Position, Website, or Event Name, Date, Arrow).
  • High Contrast: Use stark color contrasts. Dark blue or black text on a yellow or white background is infinitely more legible from a distance than pastel colors.
  • Font Size: Letters should be at least 3 to 4 inches tall to be readable from the street. Ditch the cursive fonts; stick to heavy, bold sans-serif typefaces like Impact or Arial Black.

Strategic Placement

Quantity matters, but strategic placement matters more. Focus on high-traffic intersections, the entrances to large subdivisions, and areas near local community hubs (with permission, of course). Ensure the signs are placed perpendicular to the flow of traffic so they face the drivers head-on.

Durability

Not all yard signs are created equal. For campaigns lasting more than a few weeks, ensure you are using 4mm corrugated plastic with UV-cured inks. Cheap inks will fade rapidly in the harsh Florida sun, making your brand or candidate look neglected. Invest in heavy-duty H-stakes so your signs stay upright during afternoon thunderstorms.
